About Academic Summer Camp Academic Summer offers first-class education paired with a vibrant summer camp atmosphere. We welcome students from around the world (50 countries and counting!), offering an immersive international experience at schools in Westminster, London (for Career Pathways only) and North Somerset (near Bristol). Students enjoy engaging classes run by our teaching team and fun filled on-site activities and off-site trips led by Camp Counsellors. Different to many summer camps, we aren’t an English language course; instead, we offer a wide range of curriculum subjects, academic streams and specialist courses for motivated and ambitious students centred around the CLIL methodology. Westminster
• 28 June – 9 August • Students come as part of a group • Adventurers (primary- 7-11) and Pathfinders (middle years- 11&12): one teacher per class delivering pre-planned lessons on our full primary/middle years curriculum; 38 hours per week including 15 hours teaching, on site activities/afternoon supervision/leisure trips • Explorers (12-14) and Engagers (15-17): placed in groups by age. Delivering set weekly themes and pre-planned lessons built around a topic related to the London experience (detailed breakdown is available in the Academic Summer magazine). Students have either AM or PM lessons (with trips in the alternate slot). 15/30 hours teaching per week (depending on whether you teach AM/PM/both blocks) Sidcot School - near Bristol • 5 July – 16 August • Adventurers (primary- 7-11) and Pathfinders: one teacher per class teaching our full primary/middle years curriculum, 15 hours per week
• Pathfinders (11&12) and Explorers (13&14): set curriculum of 4 lessons per day: STEAM; social studies & global perspectives; confident communicators; move and thrive (detailed subject breakdown in the Academic Summer magazine) • Engagers (15-17): students choose 4 subjects weekly (subjects list in Academic Summer magazine) • Teach either Adventurers or a mix of Pathfinders/Explorers/Engagers, depending on your subjects • Teach up to 4 blocks a week (1 block = 5 hours total, 1x 75-minute lesson, 4 days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday - no lesson on Wednesdays. Adventurers – 15 hours a week The Role At Academic Summer Camp you have plenty of freedom in what you teach; our academic team will give you guidance and help your planning but feel free to get creative! No homework or tests - our priority is providing dynamic and engaging lessons which combine theory and practical to excite our eager learners. If you’re teaching Adventurers, you’ll typically have a class who you’ll be with for the week, covering the full primary curriculum (and if you’re at our Westminster camp you’ll have afternoon supervision and leisure trips each afternoon). If you’re with seniors, you’ll usually have a mix of Pathfinders, Explorers and Engagers (at our Westminster camp this could mean you have a group of Explorers one week, Engagers the next, or Pathfinders and Explorers in the morning and Engagers in the afternoon). If you’re at our Sidcot School camp you can expect to teach either Adventurers or a mix of Pathfinders/Explorers/Engagers blocks for a mix of subjects. How many classes/streams you teach each week depends on your subject flexibility and the subjects timetabled each week. The teaching role includes but isn’t limited to: • Planning lessons, completing a SoW on Academic Summer Camp’s CRM for each block you’re scheduled to teach • Teaching lessons as scheduled • Tailoring lessons for mixed academic and language abilities • Fostering English language development following the CLIL philosophy • Develop critical thinking and study skills including use of AI and technology • Use Teams and electronic resources as we have a no paper policy with Explores and Engagers • Produce risk assessments as required and submit to the DoS/Course Director • Attending weekly teacher meetings • Attending assemblies as required • Writing weekly reports for each student in each subject/stream you teach, following guidance set out by the academic team • Ensuring you know the Be a Leader theme for the day and incorporating this into lessons, promoting the course and its values • Upholding high standards of behaviour
• Following safeguarding procedures and policies, reporting concerns appropriately including recording any incidents/concerns as an incident on the CRM • Maintaining a positive, professional relationship with students and other workers • Checking your timetable and duty rota daily • Planning and leading academic field trips (Westminster) • Working effectively with support staff (e.g technicians) and host school as needed • Following the Staff Handbook and policies • Attending the compulsory induction on the Saturday before your course begins • Being observed and given feedback by the Director of Studies/member of the SMT • Being willing to have class activities videoed/photographed for promotional purposes and for visitors (such as group leaders, parents and visiting agents) to observe classes This job description is provided as a guide to the role, and duties may change according to the needs of our students and the course. Person Specification
Essential criteria • Confidence in a range of subjects/flexibility to teach within the scope of the camp • Confidence promoting English language development using the CLIL methodology (see our magazine for more details about our philosophy) • Knowledgeable, inspiring and committed teachers who prioritise creating a fantastic learning environment for young people • A positive and flexible approach to work; ability to adapt to changing circumstances • Confident incorporating and promoting AI/technology in the classroom and curriculum • Recent teaching/tutoring experience in your subject/s • C1+ level of English • Must be age 20+ and have the existing right to work in the UK (we are unable to sponsor visa applications)
Desirable criteria • QTS (including NQT’s) • Experience of the IB Diploma
• Full availability that fits our camp dates • Prior summer school teaching experience • CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL or equivalent
Salary Teaching block rates given are inclusive of all aspects of the teaching role including planning, teaching, report writing and attending training, weekly teachers’ meetings and occasional assemblies. You are encouraged to join the camp community and welcomed to join leavers presentations and other camp celebrations, on the understanding that your time is given freely and won’t attract additional pay. On occasion you may be invited to take on additional duties, e.g. lead a trip (this excludes the Wednesday academic field trip at our
Westminster camp which is part of the academic programme), in which instance the rate of pay for this activity will be communicated to you before you accept.

There is the option to take on weekend trip shifts; please refer to the Camp Counsellor job description for information and rates.
Please note, if you’re unable to teach a lesson that you’re scheduled for a deduction of £18 per hour of lesson will be made to your salary and paid to the cover teacher who takes on this lesson. You are expected to ensure that all planning including resources are available before your week of teaching begins so that in the event a cover teacher is needed they are able to run your lesson as planned. You will be required to write reports for the week as scheduled. If you haven’t uploaded lesson plan and resources and/or you’re unable to complete reports for that class for the week the full hourly rate for that lesson/s may be deducted from your salary. Accommodation and Meals Limited accommodation is available for residential teachers, in return for taking on boarding supervision responsibilities. There may be accommodation available at a charge for workers who don’t wish to have any boarding supervision responsibility. If this is of interest to you, please let us know at interview and we will be happy to discuss availability and details. Accommodation may be a shared room. All workers staying on site must adhere to accommodation rules including curfew If you’re residential, breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in your salary package, with the expectation that you will assist with mealtime supervision, prioritise getting students through the queues ahead of yourself and promote the smooth running of mealtimes. This includes spreading out so that there aren’t tables dominated by teachers. If you’re non- residential you’ll be welcome to join us for a complimentary lunch if it falls within your teaching day, again with the understanding that you will prioritise the smooth running of the lunchtime period and will sit with students, particularly if you are teaching Adventurers.

This will include IT set up, tour and guidance on facilities available and induction essential to your role. Attendance is recommended and is built into your rate of pay. The weekly teachers’ meetings will feature specific training as needed. Child Protection We take a rigorous approach to safeguarding young people. All staff must familiarise themselves with Academic Summer Camp’s Child Protection Policy and the KCSIE (Keeping Children Safe in Education) part 1. You will be required to pass DBS check/police check and hold a safeguarding level 1 certificate issued from a recognised provider within the last 2 years; if you don’t currently have this Academic Summer will provide access to an online course.
